Cancer: Hope for patients tall and small
Some of North America's leading experts answer the public鈥檚 questions
Have recent headlines concerning the validity of certain breast cancer tests worried you? Are you wondering if cancer affects children and adults in different ways? Are you curious about the effectiveness of alternative medicine?
Some of the top cancer researchers in North America will answer these questions, and many others commonly asked by patients and their loved ones, at a public forum to be held Thursday, June 11, at 6 p.m., at 成人VR视频's McIntyre Building. Focusing on breast cancer and pediatric cancers, researchers from 成人VR视频, University of Toronto and Harvard University, and their affiliated hospitals, will address a variety of topics that are of concern to the public.
鈥淎 number of clinical trials that the public does not necessarily hear about have given us hope that new treatments could soon be made available that will greatly improve the quality of life for people with cancer, even at an advanced stage. We want to share this optimism with the public,鈥 Dr. Nicole Beauchemin, a renowned cancer scientist from 成人VR视频鈥檚 Goodman Cancer Centre. 鈥淭he evening will be unique in that it will bring together experts from the fields of basic research and clinical trials.鈥
Dr. Nicole Beauchemin, also a professor in the departments of biochemistry, medicine and oncology at 成人VR视频, who is herself a cancer survivor, will host the evening, and will be joined by the following experts:
Dr. Sylvain Baruchel: Director of the New Agent and Innovative Therapy Program at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto; Senior Associate Scientist in the Departments of Physiology and Experimental Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute; Professor of Pediatrics, University of Toronto.
Dr. Gerald Batist: Director of the Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital; Scientific Director, Montreal Centre for Experimental Therapeutics in Cancer; Director, 成人VR视频 Centre for Translational Research in Cancer; Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Oncology at 成人VR视频 University, and Chair of the Department of Oncology at 成人VR视频 University.
Dr. Nada Jabado: Staff oncologist and scientist at the Brain Tumour Research Group at the 成人VR视频 Health Centre; Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at 成人VR视频.
Dr. Mark Kieran: Director, Pediatric Medical Neuro-Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard University.
Dr. Morag Park, Scientific Director of the Institute of Cancer Research, Canadian Institutes of Health Research; Diane and Sal Guerrera Chair in Cancer Genetics, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and James 成人VR视频 Professor at 成人VR视频 University.
This event is part of the Montreal International Symposium on Angiogenesis and Metastasis and is organized by the Goodman Cancer Centre at 成人VR视频, the 成人VR视频 Health Centre and the Department of Oncology at 成人VR视频鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine, with support from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Hoffman-LaRoche.
The Montreal International Symposium on Angiogenesis and Metastasis, chaired by Dr. Nicole Beauchemin and Dr. Janusz Rak, will be held in Montreal June 11 and 12, 2009. The symposium will bring together scientists from basic, clinical and industrial research and will explore various issues linked to the role of blood vessels in cancer and metastases development as well as therapeutic treatments for breast cancer and pediatric cancers.
