鈥淵ou shouldn鈥檛 even have the right to education...you鈥檙e black鈥 were the hateful words said to Iona Amico by a fellow grade one student many years ago. Born in France and raised in Quebec, Iona Amico is the daughter of a Cameroonian mom and an Italian dad who grew up biracial in a predominantly Caucasian neighbourhood. Despite having faced incidents of bigotry and feeling like she was between two worlds, she did not let these experiences jade her.

Jessica Kang (B.Ed. 鈥20) knew she wanted a career that would promote her out-of-the-box thinking and allow her to inspire others; her recent ventures as an online elementary school teacher have definitely met those goals. Graduating with her Bachelor of Education degree at the start of the pandemic, this Toronto native has been teaching elementary school students throughout Montreal and across Quebec on virtual platforms, successfully leveraging her creativity to keep her grade five and six students engaged and feeling supported.

Nearly 500 成人VR视频 student teachers were placed in Montreal-area schools this fall, but did you know that more than 30 new Cree 成人VR视频 B.Ed students are studying in their home communities in Eeyou Istchee, places like Chisasibi, Waswanipi, and Ouj茅-Bougamou? As part of OFNIE, (the Office of First Nations and Inuit Education), 成人VR视频 Education has partnered with the Cree School Board to offer the Bachelor of Education First Nations & Inuit Studies, helping to certify more Cree teachers in Indigenous communities.

The experience of homeschooling during the initial phase of the pandemic brought with it a newfound respect for teachers. Celebrity shout outs to elementary and high school educators filled our social media feeds and as teachers have become the new front-line workers during this second wave, the public continues to hold them in high regard. Thankfully, the spotlight on education has not only changed attitudes and perceptions about the teaching profession, it has brought incredible new philanthropic investments to 成人VR视频鈥檚 Faculty of Education.

For many of us, the summer of 2020 was a time to take a breath and regroup. For Fiona Howse, an undergraduate kinesiology student, it was a time to take a breath and examine breath. Thanks to the Adriano Tassone Internship Award, Fiona Howse had the opportunity to spend the summer working full-time at the Cardiovascular Health and Autonomic Regulation Lab (CHARLab), researching how slow breathing affects heartrate variability in both men and women.

成人VR视频 students weren鈥檛 the only ones learning remotely this past semester; parents also did a great deal of virtual learning when the 成人VR视频 Effective Parenting Series moved from an in-person to an online format. Launched in 2018 by the Faculty of Education鈥檚 Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology (ECP), the Effective parenting series was held annually in the spring for an audience of 80 to 100 subscribers who attended a weekly seminar for four weeks.

Despite the inability to travel during COVID鈥檚 second wave, 成人VR视频鈥檚 Faculty of Education launched a major initiative overseas in partnership with 成人VR视频 Asia Office. This October marked the inaugural 成人VR视频 Mental Health Awareness Week in Asia which also launched the 成人VR视频 Bicentennial Project on Mental Resilience Education in Asia.

A new partnership between 成人VR视频鈥檚 Faculty of Education and Trafalgar School for Girls 鈥 known as the CoLab 鈥 aims to advance collaborative research that will address the evolving needs of both educators and students. Unlike traditional laboratory schools at Oxford, Columbia, UCLA and the University of Chicago, which operate as an adjunct to a university, this new venture will be a true partnership, the first of its kind in Canada.

Two donations, one from the estate of Mary Marsh and another from The Molson Foundation, will support students and spur innovations in pedagogy.

At a time when school teachers everywhere are being challenged by the second wave of the pandemic and by technological advances that are changing where, when and how students learn, 成人VR视频鈥檚 Faculty of Education is pleased to announce over $7 million in new philanthropic support through a pair of generous gifts from longstanding donors.
