DISE's Dr. Naomi Nichols Launches New Book

Published: 1 November 2019

Assistant Professor, Dr. Naomi Nichols of the Department of Integrated Studies in Education launched her new book this week, entitled "Youth, School, and Community: Participatory Institutional Ethnographies". This new work examines the social organization of various institutional processes that produce people’s diverse experiences. Dr. Nichols is said to have been Inspired by Himani Bannerji's observation that the very same social relations that produce one person’s experiences of inclusion, safety, and privilege are implicated in another person’s experiences of exclusion, risk and oppression.

"This research and the important analytic work that happens along the way is the product of many people’s labour — primarily the young people and youth workers who were my collaborators throughout the two projects that it describes — but also colleagues and graduate students," said Nichols.Ìý"This book would have been impossible to write without the insights of my doctoral supervisor, Dr. Alison Griffith, who passed away from cancer in September this year. She and I wrote the grant that funded these projectsÌýand she mentored me over the phone, while she was undergoing cancer treatment and palliative care. I already profoundly miss having her in my life."
