Courses

Each course offered in the Department of English begins with the designation ENGL followed a three digit number. The first digit of this course number offers a rough guide to the level of the course:

2 - U1

3 - U2

4 - U3

5 - U3/Graduate

Students normally take courses appropriate to their year of study and/or when relevant pre-requisites, where they exist, are met. That is, U1 students would, for the most part, take 200-level courses. Some 200-level courses are open to U0 students as well. For 2023-24 academic year these are: ENGL 215, 225, 227, 229, 230, 250, 290, and 297). More information and advice for U0 students can be found on the Office of Advising and Student Information ServicesÌý·É±ð²ú²õ¾±³Ù±ð.

English Majors, Minors, and Honours students may select courses at any level within reason with the approval of the instructor and on advice of advisors. That being said, U1 students are discouraged from enrolling in 400-level courses.

In-program students — that is, Majors, Minors or Honours students — should normally restrict themselves in U1 to the courses that are required for their programme of study, as follows:

Cultural Studies: ENGL 275 and ENGL 277 for all programs. ENGL 359 for Majors and Honours students ONLY.

Drama and Theatre: ENGL 230 for all programs. ENGL 355 for Majors and Honours students ONLY.

Literature: ENGL 202 and ENGL 203 for all programs. ENGL 311 for Majors and Honours students ONLY.

Note: All 500-level courses and a certain number of 200-, 300- and 400-level courses have limited enrolment and require the instructors' permission to register. Students hoping to enroll in these courses should consult relevant course descriptions for the procedures for application procedures.
