LEVEL 100 COURSES

FRSL 101 BEGINNERS FRENCH I

3 credits. 3 hours. Prerequisite: Placement test.听A comprehensive introduction to basic vocabulary, grammatical structures and speech patterns of written and oral French for students in any degree program having no previous knowledge of French. Learning to communicate at a functional level in a French-speaking environment. Short essays, cultural readings, mandatory lab practice.


FRSL 102 BEGINNERS FRENCH II

3 credits. 3 hours. Prerequisite: FRSL 101. FRSL 102 is the second term of a two-semester course series (FRSL 101 / FRSL 102) and it is open only to students who successfully completed FRSL 101.听 See FRSL 101 for course description.


FRSL 103 NEAR BEGINNERS FRENCH

3 credits. 3 hours plus mandatory language laboratory practice. Prerequisite: Placement test. Refresher course for students who have very little previous French instruction.听Not open to students who have taken or are taking FRSL 102 or FRSL 105. For students in any degree program whose knowledge of French is insufficient to qualify for Elementary French (determined by the placement test).听Instructions in basic vocabulary and grammar applied to oral/written French. Cultural texts, short essays, and practice of basic speech patterns.


FRSL 104 CORRECTIVE FRENCH PRONUNCIATION

3 credits. Winter. 2 hours of oral work, 1 hour of laboratory work. Prerequisite: Placement test or Instructor's recommendation. The course may be taken concurrently with FRSL 102 / 103 / 105;听206 / 207 / 208. Not open to students above Elementary level French. Not open to students with no previous knowledge of French. Introduction to French phonetics. Course designed for students who have some previous knowledge of French at a beginner/elementary level and need to work on pronunciation, auditory discrimination and oral expression in order to continue developing their French skills. Corrective phonetics. Intensive oral practice. Guided work in language lab.


FRSL 105 INTENSIVE BEGINNERS FRENCH

6 credits.听 6 hours, plus language laboratory and oral practice with a French monitor.听 Prerequisite: Placement test.听 Not open to students who have taken FRSL 201 or FRSL 205 or FRSL 101 or FRSL 102.听 A comprehensive introduction to basic vocabulary, grammatical structures and speech patterns of written and oral French for students in any degree program having no previous knowledge of French.听 Learning to communicate at a functional level in a French social milieu, short essays, cultural readings, mandatory lab practice and conversation class.

LEVEL 200 COURSES

FRSL 206 ELEMENTARY FRENCH

3 credits. Fall. 3 hours plus language laboratory. Prerequisite: Placement test. Only with special permission of the Department.听 This one-term course uses a task-based approach to provide students with authentic materials related to Canadian culture and prepares them for real life communication.听 Therefore, class time will be mostly dedicated to the completion of communicative tasks which often rely on the use of technology (mobile apps, blogs and other online tools).听 This course tackles different topics that students can relate to in their personal, social and academic life, and provides a review and further training in elementary language structures to develop their communication skills and digital literacy in French.


FRSL 207 ELEMENTARY FRENCH 01

6 credits. D1-D2.听 Language laboratory. Prerequisite: FRSL 101 and FRSL 102 or FRSL 103 or FRSL 104 or FRSL 105 or Placement test. Not open to students who have taken Grade 12 or 13 French in Canada, or equivalent. 6 credits. 6 hours plus language laboratory. Prerequisite: FRSL 101 and FRSL 102 or FRSL 103 or FRSL 104 or FRSL 105 or Placement test. FRSL 211D1 ORAL AND WRITTEN FRENCH 1

3 credits. 3 hours plus language laboratory. Prerequisite: Placement test. Open to students in any degree program having an elementary knowledge of French and to those who have complete FRSL 207. Not open to students from Qu茅bec. Students must also register for FRSL 211D2. No credit will be given for this course unless both FRSL 211D1 and FRSL 211D2 are successfully completed in consecutive terms. FRSL 211D1 and FRSL 211D2 together are equivalent to FRSL 211. Language lab attendance required. Grammar review, comprehension, vocabulary development, selected readings and group discussions.


FRSL 211D2 ORAL AND WRITTEN FRENCH 2

3 credits. Prerequisite: FRSL 211D1. No credit will be given for this course unless both FRSL 211D1 and FRSL 211D2 are successfully completed in consecutive terms. FRSL 211D1 and FRSL 211D2 together are equivalent to FRSL 211. See FRSL 211D1 for course description.


FRSL 212 ORAL AND WRITTEN FRENCH 1

3 credits. Fall. 3 hours plus language laboratory. Prerequisite: Placement test. Equivalent to the first half of FRSL 211. Only with special permission of the Department.


FRSL 215 ORAL AND WRITTEN FRENCH 1 - INTENSIVE

6 credits. Fall. 6 hours plus language laboratory. Prerequisite: Placement test. Open to students in any degree program having an elementary knowledge of French and to those who have completed FRSL 207. Not open to students from Qu茅bec. Language lab attendance required. Grammar review, comprehension, vocabulary development, selected readings and group discussions. Program of FRSL 211 covered in one semester.

LEVEL 300 COURSES

FRSL 321D1 ORAL AND WRITTEN FRENCH 2

3 credits. 3 hours. Prerequisite: Placement test. For those having taken FRSL 211 or equivalent. Students must also register for FRSL 321D2. No credit will be given for this course unless both FRSL 321D1 and FRSL 321D2 are successfully completed in consecutive terms. FRSL 321D1 and FRSL 321D2 together are equivalent to FRSL 321. Oral work involving discussion and expos茅s, cultural and literary readings, grammar review. Methodological component integrated in classwork and developed in frequent workshop sessions.


FRSL 321D2 ORAL AND WRITTEN FRENCH 2

3 credits. Prerequisite: FRSL 321D1. No credit will be given for this course unless both FRSL 321D1 and FRSL 321D2 are successfully completed in consecutive terms. FRSL 321D1 and FRSL 321D2 together are equivalent to FRSL 321. See FRSL 321D1 for course description.


FRSL 322 ORAL AND WRITTEN FRENCH 2

3 credits. Fall. 3 hours. Equivalent to the first half of FRSL 321. Only with special permission of the Department.


FRSL 325 ORAL AND WRITTEN FRENCH 2 - INTENSIVE

6 credits. Fall or winter. 6 hours. Prerequisite: Placement test. Priority to students who have taken FRSL 215. The program of FRSL 321 will be covered in one semester.

LEVEL 400 COURSES

FRSL 431D1 FRAN脟AIS FONCTIONNEL AVANC脡

3 credits. 3 hours. Prerequisite: Placement test. Not open to students who have taken FRSL 400, FRSL 402 or FRSL 432. Students must also register for FRSL 431D2. No credit will be given for this course unless both FRSL 431D1 and FRSL 431D2 are successfully completed in consecutive terms. FRSL 431D1 and FRSL 43D2听together are equivalent to FRSL 431. This course is designed to meet the needs of students who already possess a good command of the language and who wish to become fully functional in French. Enrichment of all four language skills with an emphasis on proficiency in oral and written communication through reading selected literary works, newspapers, and magazines. Discussions and oral presentations. Exercises and essays using selected grammatical constructions. The course will also emphasize contemporary Quebec culture.


FRSL 431D2 FRAN脟AIS FONCTIONNEL AVANC脡

3 credits. 3 hours. Prerequisite: FRSL 431D1. No credit will be given for this course unless both FRSL 431D1 and FRSL 431D2 are successfully completed in consecutive terms. FRSL 431D1 and FRSL 43D2听together are equivalent to FRSL 431. See FRSL 431D1 for course description.


FRSL 432 FRAN脟AIS FONCTIONNEL

3 credits. Fall. 3 hours. Prerequisite: Placement test. Equivalent to the first half of FRSL 431. Only with special permission of the Department.


FRSL 449 LE FRAN脟AIS DES M脡DIAS

3 credits. 3 hours. Prerequisite : Placement test. Advanced course focusing on the enrichment of all language skills through analyzing television or radio programs and newspaper or magazine articles. Oral presentations, debates, group discussions and essays which emphasize current events and the social and cultural life of Quebec today.
