Speaker Biographies
Dr. Oni Blackstock
Dr. Oni Blackstock, MD, MHS, is the founder and Executive Director of Health Justice, a highly regarded consulting firm that supports health-related organizations in centering anti-racism and equity in the workplace, while addressing health inequities in the communities they serve. She is a board-certified primary care and HIV physician, as well as a trained researcher. Her career spans clinical practice, research, public health, and advocacy.
Dr. Blackstock鈥檚 groundbreaking research has illuminated the intersection of race, gender, and HIV, and has emphasized the need to disrupt systemic barriers that perpetuate health inequities. She is a thought leader in HIV and health equity, recognized for her dedicated work advocating for equitable healthcare practices. Her advocacy work has influenced policies and programs that prioritize marginalized communities, informed by her own experience navigating multiple marginalized identities.
Before founding Health Justice, Dr. Blackstock served as Assistant Commissioner for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where she led the Bureau of HIV. During her tenure, she oversaw New York City's globally recognized HIV epidemic response, and established the first Bureau-based Racial Equity and Social Justice program within the Health Department. Dr. Blackstock also held an Assistant Professor position at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she provided clinical care and conducted research funded by the NIH and CDC. Dr. Blackstock holds degrees from Harvard College, Harvard Medical School, and Yale School of Medicine.
Marilyn Ahun
Prof. Marilyn Naana Ahun is an Assistant Professor from Ghana in the Department of Medicine, with an associate membership in the Department of Global and Public Health. After completing a Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Honors Psychology (成人VR视频), she went on to complete a PhD in Public Health and Health Promotion (Universit茅 de Montr茅al) and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Global Health (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health). Her doctoral research examined mediators and moderators of the association between maternal depression and children鈥檚 cognitive outcomes, whilst her postdoctoral research focused on the implementation of interventions to promote early child development in global contexts. Angela Campbell
Prof. Campbell joined 成人VR视频 in 2003 and is currently Full Professor in the Faculty of Law. She has been serving as Associate Provost (Equity and Academic Policies) since 2015. Her accomplishments in that role are too numerous to list, but I would like to highlight her role leading the development of 成人VR视频鈥檚 EDI Strategic Plan, Anti-Black Racism Action Plan, and the Provost Task Force on Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Education. More recently, along with Prof. Labeau, she has led the 2022 Initiative against Islamophobia and Antisemitism and continues to work with our communities in these challenging times. Angela Campbell is a Professor in the Faculty of Law, specializing in Family, Health, Successions and Criminal Law. She has previously served as Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) and Director (Institute of Comparative Law) in the Law Faculty.
Victor Dzau
Victor J. Dzau is the President of the US National Academy of Medicine (NAM). In addition, he serves as Vice Chair of the US National Research Council. He is Chancellor Emeritus and James B. Duke Professor of Medicine at Duke University and the past President and CEO of the Duke University Health System. Previously, Dr. Dzau was the Hersey Professor of Medicine and Chairman of Medicine at Harvard Medical School鈥檚 Brigham and Women鈥檚 Hospital, as well as Bloomfield Professor and Chairman of Medicine at Stanford University. He is an internationally acclaimed leader and scientist has made a significant impact through his seminal research in cardiovascular medicine and genetics.
Timothy Evans
Dr. Evans joined 成人VR视频 in 2019, as the Inaugural Director and Associate Dean of the School of Population and Global Health (SPGH) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Associate Vice-Principal (Global Policy and Innovation). In April 2020, he was named Executive Director of Canada鈥檚 COVID-19 Immunity Task Force. Before 成人VR视频, he led a long career at the forefront of advancing global health equity and strengthening health systems delivery.
Lesley Fellows
Dr. Lesley Fellows, MDCM, DPhil, is Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Fellows joined 成人VR视频鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) in 2004 and is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, as well as a Neurologist at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) and the Royal Victoria Hospital at the 成人VR视频 Health Centre. Dr. Fellows holds a Bachelor of Science in physiology and a medical degree from 成人VR视频. She completed her Neurology residency at 成人VR视频 as well, followed by post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania. A Rhodes Scholar, she earned a DPhil in neurophysiology from the University of Oxford. In 2021, she was appointed a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
Naomie Gamondele
Naomie Gamondele immigrated to Tiohti脿:ke from France ten years ago. Of Hungarian and Congolese descent, she completed a DEC and a Bachelor of Nursing Integrated. With six years of nursing experience in pediatrics (surgery/trauma, neurology), teaching, and more recently in Nunavik, Naomie began her medical degree at 成人VR视频 in 2023. These experiences have fueled her deep passion for Global Health, equity, and justice.
Philippe Gervais
Philippe Gervais joined 成人VR视频 as Vice-President (Communications and Institutional Relations) in August 2024. A seasoned leader in communications and public affairs with more than 30 years of experience across the public and private sectors, Mr. Gervais has served in various governmental roles and worked as a public affairs consultant in the private and public sectors. In 2016, Mr. Gervais took up the position of Managing Principal for Navigator Ltd, a Canadian public affairs, crisis management, government relations and public opinion research company. Prior to joining Navigator, Mr. Gervais served as Vice-President of a national government relations firm, The Capital Hill Group Inc., for 22 years. Earlier in his career, he worked in both the Federal and Quebec Provincial Governments.
Catherine Hankins
Catherine Hankins is an Adjunct Professor at 成人VR视频鈥檚 Department of Global & Public Health. She previous served as co-Chair of Canada鈥檚 COVID-19 Immunity Task Force. She was the Chief Scientific Adviser to UNAIDS in Geneva for a decade, leading the scientific knowledge translation team focused on ensuring ethical and participatory biomedical HIV prevention trial conduct, convening mathematical modelling teams, and supporting country implementation of proven biomedical HIV prevention modalities. She is Honorary Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Hankins was named to the Order of Canada in 2013 and was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2024.
Charles Larson
Charles Larson completed his medical degree and specializations in Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine & Public Health at 成人VR视频. Dr. Larson鈥檚 academic career has primarily focused on capacity building and implementation research to support the scaling up of life-saving interventions for children under the age of five. Prof Madhukar Pai, MD, PhD, FCAHS, FRSC is the Inaugural Chair, Department of Global and Public Health at the 成人VR视频 School of Population and Global Health. He holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology & Global Health. He was previously Director of the 成人VR视频 International TB Centre. He is Editor-In-Chief of PLOS Global Public Health. - Alex W. Strasberg MD CM 1921 and Harvey M. Weinstein MD CM 1967 Global Health Award: Established in 2016 by Rhona Weinstein (n茅e Strasberg) BA 1967, MA 1969, and Harvey M. Weinstein BSc 1963, MD CM 1967, in honour of Rhona鈥檚 late father, Alex W. Strasberg, MD CM 1921 and Harvey M. Weinstein, MD CM 1967, both pioneers and advocates in clinical work and research related to vulnerable populations.
An immigrant to Canada, Dr. Strasberg was among the earliest Jewish students to graduate from 成人VR视频 Medicine. He became a urologist on staff at the Jewish General Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital, conducted research, and taught in the Department of Urology at 成人VR视频. He devoted his practice to treating the poor and was for many years the physician of choice for many in the Montreal Chinese immigrant community.
Dr. Weinstein trained as a psychiatrist at Yale University and worked in university student health at Stanford University as well as in hospital and private practice settings. In later years he earned a public health degree from UC Berkeley and devoted his time to research and policy in refugee and immigrant health. Author of two books and numerous articles, he also became involved in human rights scholarship and advocacy about how countries respond to ethnic cleansing and genocide.
Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs to provide support for undergraduate medical students or post-graduate residents in the Faculty who are engaged in global health research and/or clinical training related to immigrant, refugee, and aboriginal/indigenous populations, in Canada and abroad. Support may include funds for travel, housing, research, and/or clinical experiences. Preference will be given to projects of merit and projects with cross-disciplinary perspectives as well as faculty support. The value of this award will vary. - Ambassador Paul Frazer Travel Award for Global Health : Established in 2015 by Paul Frazer, BA 1970, to provide support for two graduate students in the Masters of Public Health Program in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health at 成人VR视频, who are completing the practicum in under-resourced areas of the world. Anthony Ashworth MDCM 1961 and family to honour the late Dorothy and William Ashworth of Montreal, the award(s) will support medical students conducting their elective clinical clerkship in remote regions in Canada or in a developing country. As a result of his many trips to the James Bay region, Dr. Ashworth believed that practicing with limited technology made the physician a better clinician. It is hoped that those who benefit from these awards make aid to underserved areas of the world a part of their future responsibility. - Bubbie and Nanny Global Health Travel Award: Established in 2015 by Michael Shevell, BSc 1980, M.D.,C.M. 1984, in honor of his children's grandmothers, to provide travel support for post-graduate medical residents in either pediatrics or pediatric neurology within the Faculty of Medicine who are pursuing an elective overseas in under- resourced areas in the world, or among underserved populations in Canada or for healthcare professionals involved in a 成人VR视频 project overseas. - Dr. Alice Benjamin Global Maternal and Child Health Awards: Established in 2018 in honour of Dr. Alice Benjamin by family, friends and patients whose lives she touched throughout her career. To provide support for one or more students or trainees who are pursuing an elective or a research project overseas in under-resourced areas of the world. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs. First preference will be given to medical residents. - Dr. Alice M. Chan鈥怸ip Humanitarian Global Health Initiatives Award: Established in 2022 by Alice M. Chan-Yip, C.M., MD CM 1962, FRCPC, FAAP, D.Sc. honoris causa 2018. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, upon the recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs and the Director of the School of Population and Global Health, to one or more undergraduate or graduate students in the School. This award may be used to help defray costs related to travel and research for students participating in health-focused emergency or humanitarian relief projects. Preference will be given to students engaging in nutrition or mental health focused research or intervention through fieldwork.
- Dr. Freda M. Omaswa Travel Award for the Study of Infectious and Tropical Diseases: Established in 2017 in memory of Freda M. Omaswa, MDCM 2008 by her classmates, family, friends and colleagues. Freda was an inspirational human with an exceptional warmth and sincerity that drove her to always put the needs of others ahead of her own. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon the recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs to provide travel support for a MDCM student traveling to Africa in order to gain experience in tropical and infectious diseases. Preference will be given to a MDCM student traveling to Uganda. Value: approximately $3,000.
The Dr. Freda Omaswa Travel award was established to honour and perpetuate the legacy of Dr Freda M. Omaswa, who graduated from 成人VR视频 Med in 2008.
Freda was an accomplished and highly talented scientist, physician and infectious disease specialist. Her vision was the attainment of empowered healthy populations in Uganda, Africa and the world. She succumbed to metastatic colon cancer in 2016, at the age of 33 years.
Even after being diagnosed with terminal cancer and undergoing chemotherapy, Freda remained active in her research, which involved a partnership between the National Institute of Health in the U.S. and UBC. She was working on a malaria vaccine project.
For those adventurous of spirit and generous of heart, with a special interest in traveling to the African continent, this is an opportunity to expand your medical horizons. Freda lived her live with humility and humor, and these characteristics will serve a worthy recipient well.

Sen Travel Award in Global Health Surgery: Established in 2016 by Dr. Milan Sen, BSc 1994, MDCM 1998, to provide travel support for undergraduate medical students interested in global surgery within the Faculty of Medicine who are pursuing research projects overseas in under resourced areas in the world, or among underserved populations in Canada or U.S.A. - Dr. Yuk Chan Ma and Dr. Yuen Kok Chan Prize in Multicultural and International Medicine: This award is for a project that has ALREADY been completed. Established in October 2006 by Dr. Alice Chan鈥怸ip, M.D., C.M. 1962, in memory of her late parents, the prize is awarded annually by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Scholarship Committee to a medical student who participates in a Canadian multicultural or international elective, research project or community service experience of at least four weeks. The prize (up to $1000) will be awarded to the student who presents the best project demonstrating an understanding of the contribution of social and cultural factors to health
- Global Health Travel Awards for Postgraduate Medical Residents: Established in 2015 by the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) program and GHP, this award supports 成人VR视频 medicine residents and fellows pursuing their global health interests through an elective or research project. Any registered 成人VR视频 medical resident or fellow (any year, any specialty) in good standing is eligible. While purely clinical electives can be proposed, research-oriented projects will be given preference. The elective or research work must be conducted in a low or middle income country, or among underserved populations in Canada (i.e. Aboriginal populations). Awards will be given for 4 week or 8 week electives or research projects at varying amounts. - Informed Investment in Health Innovation Award: The Informed Investment in Health Innovation (IIHI) Scholars 鈥 Undergraduate Program is a special program initiated within the 成人VR视频 Global Health Scholars - Undergraduate program. While costs and cost-effectiveness are key considerations in the adoption, implementation, and sustainability of health interventions, they remain under-studied. This special program provides opportunities for 成人VR视频 undergraduate students to learn about and gain experience in cost assessment, economic evaluation, and/or modeling through research projects. To investigators, this program provides an opportunity to be paired with a 成人VR视频 faculty member with methodological expertise in the general area of health economics and modeling to assist with executing a project which would benefit from incorporating these methodologies.

Wolfsdorf Fund for Global Child Health: The fund will provide travel support for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, and healthcare and allied professionals who are pursuing an elective or working on a global maternal & child health project at the University. - Margaret W. Siber MDCM 1970 and George R. Siber MDCM 1970 Global Heath Scholar Award: Established in 2020 by Margaret W. Siber, MDCM 1970, and George R. Siber, MDCM 1970, in honor of the 50th anniversary of their graduation, to inspire a passion for global health. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, upon the recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs, to students participating in the Global Health Scholars Program. This award provides support for one or more undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the Faculty who are undertaking a mentored global health research and/or clinical training project internationally, among Indigenous communities in North America or in Montreal. Support may include funds for travel, housing, research, and/or clinical experiences. Value: varies
- Mary A Metcalf International Travel Fund: The Mary A. Metcalf International Travel Fund is designated to support international research of undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-graduate medical residents within the Faculty of Medicine. Elective, research project or community service program must be at least four weeks. Its intent is to promote the training of health care workers and researchers to combat global health disparities, by supporting students to work with underserved populations in resource limited settings.
- Medical Class of '84 Student Bursary: Established in 2010 by Medicine Class of 1984 to commemorate their 25th reunion, the award(s) will help support the travel and accommodation expenses of one or more senior medical students (year 3 or 4) pursuing an elective overseas in a developing country. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon the recommendation of the Director of the Global Health Program. One bursary will be awarded in each application round.
- OMAF Scholarship: The Osler Medical Aid Foundation awards are intended to support undergraduate medical students conducting service-learning or clinical electives in underserved communities both in Canada and overseas for a minimum duration of 4 weeks. Scholarships of up to $1,000 are available to support travel and accommodation expenses.
- Soe-Lin-Hecht Global Health Graduate Award: Established in 2019 by Dr. Shan Soe-Lin, BSc 2003, PhD 2009, Dr. Robert Hecht, and Hla Hla Myint Soe-Lin. To provide support for one or more outstanding Master's students in the Faculty of Medicine and conducting research in public health or epidemiology. For students conducting research overseas in low or middle-income countries, or in an indigenous community in Canada. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs.
- Soe-Lin-Hecht Global Health Scholar Undergraduate Award: Established in 2019 by Dr. Shan Soe-Lin, BSc 2003, PhD 2009, Dr. Robert Hecht, and Hla Hla Myint Soe-Lin, in memory of Dr. Soe Lin, who was an ardent believer in the importance of using a good education to better the lot of humanity. To provide annual travel support and/or stipends for up to three outstanding undergraduate students who are participating in the Global Health Scholars program in the Faculty of Medicine. For students pursuing a mentored research project overseas in low or middle-income countries, or in an indigenous community in Canada. Preference will be given to students pursuing studies in Microbiology and Immunology. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of the Director of Global Health Programs.
- Spencer-Hick Family Global Health Education and Training Fund: The goal of the Fund is to support undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows pursuing training, travel, fieldwork, research, and other activities related to global health. Value: varies.
- Steinberg Fund for Interdisciplinary Global Health Research Award: The goal of the Steinberg Fund for Interdisciplinary Global Health Research is to catalyze innovative and impactful global health research at 成人VR视频 & affiliated hospitals, by providing seed funding that can help launch new, interdisciplinary global health research projects and make them competitive for sustained external funding.
- The Knightsgrange Foundation: The Foundation supports all aspects of the program including mentorship by academic staff, summer placement on international global health projects, training events, and other unique opportunities. Undergraduate student recipients supported by the Knightsgrange Foundation are known as John Locke Churchill Scholars.
- The Medicine Class of 1965 International Health Student Fund: Established in May 2000 by the Class of Medicine 1965 in appreciation of the education they received at 成人VR视频. Funds will be used to allow medical students to pursue research or clinical electives overseas. One bursary will be awarded in each application round.
