The conference brought together mental health practitioners, psychiatrists, psychologists, residents, researchers, mental health social workers, advocates and experts from diverse traditions to discuss the implications of religious and spiritual teachings for mental health theory, policy, and practice.

International Course in Qualitative Research

April 23-27, 2018

The workshop was led by Dr. Danielle Groleau from the Division of Social and Transcultural Psychiatry. The participants had the opportunity to learn the rationale behind qualitative methods from a philosophical and social perspective, and had practice sessions with interviewing using the MINI and coding of an interview that was carried out during the workshop.


Kathmandu

International Course on Cultural Psychiatry and Global Mental Health

October 16-17, 2017

The course attracted 65 participants and provided knowledge and lively exchange on topics in cultural psychiatry, trauma, and global mental health drawing on expertise and clinical experiences from Canada, Nepal and Norway.

Global mental health research requires cross-disciplinary skills and knowledge of the social determinants of mental health, and of the interrelations between social inequalities and health outcomes. Research methodologies (both qualitative and quantitative) must be adapted to resource-poor countries, cross-cultural sensitivity and competency in negotiating roles and expectations with collaborating partners based in LMICs.
