Prior to his current appointment, he worked as a research associate with the Alberta Center for Active Living, in Edmonton.

Dr. Garc铆a鈥檚 research interests include school- and community-based physical activity and health promotion, and youth development and socialization in physical activity and sport.聽 His research has an ecological orientation that focuses on relational processes linking individuals with their environments. His research has been funded by the Quebec Funds for Research on Society and Culture, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Dr. Garc铆a is currently a member of the research team of the well-established Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Project (KSDPP). In 2010, KSDPP was the recipient of the CIHR Partnership Award, in recognition of a partnership combining scientific rigor with community relevance and for advancing indigenous-researcher ethical agreements. During 2009 and 2010, Dr. Garc铆a was French spokesperson for the organization Active Healthy Kids Canada during the release of its influential Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth. He has recently collaborated with the International NGO Right to Play in the implementation of its Sports for Development and Peace initiatives in Peru and the evaluation of its early childhood education programs in Benin. Dr. Garc铆a has also served recently as member of the expert advisory committee of the new regional Basque Plan of Physical Activity for Health, in Spain.
