The specimen consists of the upper stomach (cardia, with the lower esophagus (E) evident on the back view (A)). The entire stomach wall is replaced by a tumor in which numerous 0.5 - 1 mm cystic spaces can be seen (arrows on magnified view (B)).

Comment

The term "colloid" refers to secretion of mucus by the malignant cells, which is so abundant that it accumulates in spaces that may be visible to the naked eye. Rodin states that the case associated with this specimen was described by Osler in the Montreal General Hospital Reports 1880: 302 - 304.聽 However, it is not clear from the description that specimen 50聽relates to that case.
