FAQ

If I complete the concurrent bachelor of music/education degrees will I be certified to teach in my home province or state?

Many graduates from our concurrent B.Mus./B.Ed. program and from the Education Faculty鈥檚 B.Ed. Music program get teaching jobs in other Canadian provinces, U.S. states and in other countries (for example: Dubai, France, England, Korea, Singapore) with the teaching certification they receive after completing their studies here.
In some cases, you may need to pass 1-2 extra courses after graduating in order to teach in other Canadian provinces or in U.S. states. These courses are normally about educational law and procedures, or about religion (in Catholic school districts only).
In many U.S. states, everyone needs to pass a test in order to qualify for a teaching licence. This test is normally about musical knowledge, and our graduates need to complete it too.
You will be certified to teach music at the elementary and secondary school level when you graduate from our program. However, you sometimes need a second teachable subject (such as English, Math, etc.) in order to teach at the high school level. You can find out more about this by contacting the Teacher Licensing Board in the U.S. state or Canadian province that you want to teach in. Take this into consideration when planning for your degree and when choosing your electives.

Will I still able to teach if I choose not to complete the concurrent B.Mus./B.Ed. program, but only a minor in music education with my B.Mus. degree?

You can teach privately in a studio but no, you cannot teach in a public school setting without a concurrent B.Mus./B.Ed. degree.

I have heard that I can graduate with any type of B.Mus. degree, then do a 2-year teaching certificate so I can teach. Is this true?

Yes, this is true. If you graduate with a B.Mus. degree, you can apply for the B.Ed. Music program offered through the Faculty of Education. Depending on your educational background, this program will lead to a teaching certification in approximately 2 to 2.5 years.

Do I have to be able to play all of the instruments by the time I finish the music education degree?

Over the course of your degree in music education, you will acquire skills on a range of instruments including brass, woodwinds, percussion as well as vocal techniques. In addition, you will choose between studying guitar or strings. We also offer world percussion that you can select as an elective.
