Assessment Task Extension

Consult the section before requesting an extension to complete a required course assessment.

Note: Students cannot request for an extension to complete a practical exam if they have been assigned an examination date. They may, however, apply for an exam deferral request. See for detail.

Course Overlap between Programs

The Schulich School of Music allows up to a maximum of 6 credits of course overlaps between two minor programs, or a minor program and a major program.听

Students pursuing two music majors are required to complete the full requirements for each major.听 Consult with a Senior Program Advisor which type of course overlaps are permitted between the two music major programs.听听听

Course Withdrawals

Course Withdrawal with/without Refund

After the Course Change (Add/Drop) Period, you may withdraw from your courses without academic penalty in any given term up to the course withdrawal deadline. There are two deadlines to withdraw - one that allows for a full tuition refund, and a later one that does not. Refer to the Key Academic Dates website for course withdrawal deadlines.

Ensembles (MUEN): Students must first consult with the Ensemble Director/Supervisor before withdrawing from an ensemble.

Practical Instruction/Exam (MUIN): Students cannot withdraw from MUIN courses on Minerva.

  • If you wish to withdraw from practical instruction, email teacherpreference.music [at] mcgill.ca .
  • If you wish to withdraw from a practical exam, email practicalexams.music [at] mcgill.ca .

Non-attendance of classes does not constitute a withdrawal. It will result in a grade of "J" (failure due to absence).

Late Course Withdrawal

If you miss the course withdrawal deadlines but wish to withdraw from a course due to unforeseeable extenuating circumstances, you can request a late course withdrawal.

The deadline to submit a Late Course Withdrawal Request is the last day of class.

Eligibility for a Late Course Withdrawal

Late course withdrawals are meant to help students who are severely ill or dealing with unforeseeable, significant extenuating circumstances that prevented them from withdrawing by the posted deadline.

You are NOT eligible for a late course withdrawal in the following circumstances:

  • You are concerned about getting a poor grade in the course.
  • You were unaware you were enrolled in the course.
  • You require an absence for social activities, leisure events, or for pre-arranged holidays/vacations, including overseas travel.
  • You are not / no longer eligible to take this course as part of your academic program.
  • You have a minor illness or are experiencing minor personal matters (unless you were not in a position to complete your coursework for more than just a few days).
  • You have already attended the final exam for the course (in whole or in part).
  • You have received a final course grade (other than K, J, L, or NR). If you have a final course grade, your request will not be considered.

If according to the above you are not eligible for a late course withdrawal, please contact Music Student Affairs to discuss future degree planning and your academic trajectory.

Before Submitting a Request for a Late Course Withdrawal

  1. In the case of a flare-up of a chronic condition, a note from your health practitioner will need to specify that they observed the flare-up and provide the date(s) during which you were unable to complete your coursework. Note: diagnosed anxiety disorder is considered to be a chronic issue. However, if your note simply states 鈥渁nxiety鈥, then this is considered to be an incidental illness.
  2. If you have requested late course withdrawals or deferred exams in the past, new requests will be reviewed more stringently and are unlikely to be approved. We will need to see evidence that you have taken measures to manage your condition and your course load to avoid relying on late course withdrawals.
  3. If you are selectively asking to drop only one, or a few, of the total number of courses in which you are enrolled in a given term, your explanation and supporting documents must address why you are able to complete some courses, but not others.

Withdrawing from courses may affect your financial aid or immigration status. If either of these apply to you, you are urged to consult with the Scholarships and Student Aid office or International Student Services respectively.

Submit a late course withdrawal request

Read these requirements carefully before submitting a Request for a Late Course Withdrawal:

  1. Prepare a concise statement (between 100 and 450 words).
  • Your statement should explain why you missed the course withdrawal deadline, why you are requesting a late course withdrawal, and the measures you took to avoid relying on a late course withdrawal, such as support services or resources you used, reduction in course-load, etc. Please make sure to address any of the 3 considerations above if they apply to you.
  1. Supporting documentation:
  • Adequate supporting documentation is required. Note that supporting documentation does not guarantee approval.
  • Supporting documents must be uploaded to the Request for Late Course Withdrawal (e.g. medical certificate, hospital records, accident/police reports).
  • Medical documents must include your full name and be issued by a licensed health practitioner (e.g. Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Social Worker, Physician, Psychiatrist, Surgeon, Nurse, Health Professional from the 成人VR视频 Student Wellness Hub) who has observed and diagnosed your condition prior to submitting the Request for Late Course Withdrawal.
  • Supporting documentation is in English or French (translations must be from certified translators).

If you meet the criteria for a late course withdrawal, submit this .

An incomplete application will be denied. This will result in a grade of "J" (failure due to absence).
