Applying mathematical models to the study of neurological disorders

Yasser Iturria-Medina's focus is combining different sources of information about the brain to explain how the brain works and how to control the progression of neurological disorders.

Yasser Iturria-Medina became an assistant professor at The Neuro in 2018.听He is also an associate member听of the Ludmer Centre for Neuroinformatics and Mental Health and听the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre. His focus is combining different sources of information about the brain, including molecular data, and multi-modal brain imaging to explain how the brain works and how to control the progression of neurological disorders.

Using mathematical and computational models Medina sift through massive amounts of data to find patterns and correlations which provide valuable insight into how neurological diseases progress.

鈥淭raditionally there has been a lack of integration of different information, and methods that I would like to implement would be precisely bringing together this different source of information,鈥 he says.

Medina鈥檚 goal is apply these models to different neurological disorders, including epilepsy and schizophrenia.

鈥淢y position is very interesting because I have the opportunity not only to continue doing the research that I like but also to interact with new students, discussing new discuss new ideas, solving new problems and expanding on the previous models I was working on before.鈥
