Fellowship in Maxillofacial Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction

A Fellowship in Maxillofacial Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction is available for Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons whom wish to be involved in the treatment and reconstruction of oral cancer patients.

Overview

This is a 1-year Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. The fellow will split his time into three activities, clinical activities, research and teaching.

In the clinical aspect of the Fellowship, the fellow will be assessing patients with head and neck malignancies and benign tumors of the jaws. He will be responsible of working up these patients and operating on them under the supervision of staff surgeons. He will be also following up on head and neck patients seen at the Outpatient Clinic. He will be exposed to different pathologies and reconstructions that involve mainly the maxillofacial area.

In the research aspect of the Fellowship, the fellow will have to prepare a research project which should lead to the publication of an article in a peer reviewed journal. The fellow is also encouraged to participate in different research initiatives related to head and neck cancer patients.

In the teaching aspect of the Fellowship, the fellow will attend weekly teaching rounds with the Oral and Maxillofacial resident. He will also have regular readings to complete and discuss with attending staff surgeons. The fellow is also expected to present head and neck lectures to the undergrads and residents.

The fellow will be evaluated on a routine basis by the attending staff surgeons and will meet every four months with the Fellowship Director for a formal discussion of his progress.

Requirements

The fellowship is only open to Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons who have graduated from an accredited North American Oral and Maxillofacial residency program.

  • A letter of intent
  • 3 reference letters:
    • one from the residency program director
    • the two other ones from a surgeon who is familiar with your academic abilities
