May Griffith is a Full Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering at Universit茅 de Montr茅al. She led a multinational, interdisciplinary team that was first in the world to regenerate the human cornea in clinical trials, showing that the adult human cornea is capable of regeneration. MG works with cell-free biomaterials that mimic the body鈥檚 extracellular matrix. Using biomaterials made from recombinant human collagen, shaped and sized like a cornea, she and surgeon Per Fagerholm stimulated the ingrowth of endogenous progenitor cells and nerves into the implant, thereby regenerating the human cornea. She is currently working on a family of injectable biomimetic materials, including a LiQD Cornea, that substitutes recombinant human collagen with short collagen-like peptides templated on a unique inflammation-suppressing backbone. The LiQD Cornea is delivered as a liquid but gels spontaneously within 5-10 minutes, promoting regeneration. The easy-to-use LiQD Cornea aims to enable use by trained medical personnel in all settings, including refugee camps and underdeveloped areas, for universal accessibility. The Griffith lab is also working with other researchers to enable the delivery of bioactives via biomimetic materials developed for various applications in other targeted tissues and organs.
