ECHO is an interactive online medical education program, connecting health care providers with the interprofessional team the the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit at the Montreal General Hospital to advance learning and enhance clinical skills.

Supporting primary care providers in diagnosis and management of their chronic pain patients.

  • Employ a comprehensive approach to assessing and helping patients manage chronic pain and risk
  • Understand the burden of chronic pain in our society
  • Differentiate between neuropathic and nociceptive pain

Pain History, Assessment, and Qualitative Sensory Exam

  • Perform a pain assessment integrating the relevant components from the history and physical exam (and measures/scales)
  • Recall the different types of pain (nociceptive, neuropathic and nociplastic)

Patient Motivation and Goal Setting

  • Develop an approach to goal setting when discussing pain treatments / strategies with patients
  • Develop an approach to helping patients set SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound) goals
  • Develop an approach to understand and motivate the patient into action

Opioids Tapering
  • Discuss the benefits and risks of tapering
  • Address common barriers to tapering opioids
  • Manage opioid withdrawal symptoms

Back Pain & Spinal Stenosis

  • Recognize yellow and red flags in acute and chronic low back pain
  • Intervene appropriately to prevent evolution into Chronic Low-Back Pain
  • Manage: chronic non-specific low-back pain, spinal stenosis, radicular syndromes using guideline-based treatments

  • Diagnose migraine headache
  • Identify 3 risk factors for headache chronicity
  • Be familiar with headache guidelines

Fibromyalgia

  • Be aware of the 2012 Canadian Fibromyalgia Guidelines and the updated 2019 FM Diagnostic Criteria
  • Recall and describe the maladaptive neuroplasticity underlying FM
  • Confident and able to promote active management strategies for patients with FM
