Welcome to the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBMS) within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ. The SBMS is a powerhouse in interdisciplinary biomedical research, training and education and unites the Departments of Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Human Genetics, Microbiology & Immunology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics and Physiology, as well as the Goodman Cancer Institute and the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Institute of Genomic Medicine.

Situated in the multicultural, multilingual city of Montreal, the SBMS is home to world-class scientists, staff and outstanding trainees from Quebec, Canada and beyond. Leveraging the strong history and record of achievement of its unique departments and institutes, the School offers a transformative approach to education, training and research. Current SBMS strengths are harnessed as new and sustained investments are being made to ensure our commitment to outstanding biomedical research and education. A lifeblood of the SBMS is its inclusive environment that supports its student, postdoctoral fellows, staff and faculty. Each year, the SBMS educates over 1,500 undergraduate students and trains close to 700 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows across its departments and institutes.

Within the structure of the SBMS, graduate students in our programs can tailor their research experience to their academic and career needs and become scientific leaders. For instance, the popular ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ Biomedical Research Accelerator (MBRA) summer program gives undergraduates from Canada and around the world the chance to gain hands-on research experience and skills to prepare them for graduate studies and further propel their careers.

Excellence in research is an essential building block of the SBMS and provides the foundation for our world-leading School. In 2023, projects based in the SBMS secured more than $23 million in research funds from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), attesting to the quality and innovation of the research we do.

Important for this research is access to advanced infrastructure and technologies – at the SBMS we are fortunate to have world-class scientific platforms that enable cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research. SBMS researchers work in collaboration with partners at the , The Neuro and the , giving SBMS trainees opportunities to team up with experts in basic science, clinical research and patient care. This approach is further advanced by our recently launched Graduate Certificate in Translational Biomedical Science Research.

The SBMS provides a foundation for a new, innovative approach to biomedical research. Our trainees, staff and faculty are fully committed to creating a positive impact on society by helping to transform education, training and research in the biomedical sciences.

Are you ready to join us?
