The Office of Medical Learner Affairs is pleased to present medical learners with an updated UGME Policy:ÌýAccommodation for Pregnancy, Pregnancy-Related Conditions and/or Parenting.

In collaboration with the MSS Equity Representatives, MSW, and UGME, this revision was initiated in response to student feedback and in accordance with current evidenced-based practices.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • The MDCM Program acknowledges that families include all genders, sexualities and constructs
  • On-Call Expectation: Students who are pregnant will be excused from overnight call or overnight shift work from the 20th week of gestation onward.Ìý
  • Clinical Rotations: To avoid exposure to certain gases used as treatment in the ER or OR, or to certain infectious diseases that are harmful in pregnancy, rotations may be modified or moved to another time to ensure the safety of the pregnant student.Ìý
  • After 32 weeks’ gestation: Pregnant students in the operating room should be able to rest after 2 hours of prolonged standing.
  • Student parents are entitled to up to 5 additional days off to meet the care needs of their children, divided between sick days and flex days for healthcare appointments or urgent personal emergency or medical crisis.
  • Student parents are eligible to have priority placement at Rural Family Medicine sites that are within daily driving distances of Montreal.
  • With advance notice, breastfeeding mothers are eligible for priority placement at rural Family Medicine sites.

Breastfeeding/Pumping Room in the Meredith Annex

The Office of Medical Learner Affairs has a private a room in the Meredith Annex for medical students that require a space to pump milk or breastfeed their child. There is also access to a sink and a dedicated fridge for milk storage. For more information and access please contact officemedlearneraffairs [at] mcgill.ca.
