Combined Professional+Research Training

Students admitted to the M.Sc. (Applied) degree who wish to acquire research as well as professional training may opt to complete a Master鈥檚 thesis (so-called 鈥淢.Sc. Combined program鈥).

Students in the M.Sc. Combined program must first be admitted to the M.Sc.A. degree and complete the course-based curriculum in the same way as all other M.Sc.A. students. These students are then registered in the M.Sc. (thesis) program, for a maximum of one additional year, when they complete 24 credits corresponding to the Master鈥檚 thesis.听

Admission to the M.Sc. Combined program depends upon the student鈥檚 academic excellence and the availability of an appropriate thesis supervisor with complementary听research interests.听Most students in the M.Sc. Combined program are accepted during the first semester of their M.Sc.A. program and make progress on their thesis during the summer between Year 1 and Year 2 of the M.Sc.A., and during the third year when they are formally registered in the M.Sc. degree program.

Why do Students do combined professional and research training?

  • Future studies: thesis research provides an excellent way to evaluate possible doctoral studies options and to prepare for a PhD program;
  • Specialization: thesis research provides knowledge in a specific area of communication sciences and disorders and/or a more in-depth understanding of a particular disordered population;
  • Skills: thesis research provides students will valuable skills, which are useful to those interested in pursuing research activities along with professional service.

Each year approximately 10% of the students in the M.Sc.A. program elect to pursue thesis research. View examples of theses completed in recent years.听
