Black Student Librarian Fellowship Program

The Black Student Librarian Fellowship Program offers the opportunity for a Black student to pursue a Master of Information Studies (MISt) degree at 成人VR视频 and to work part-time as a student librarian (or archivist) at the 成人VR视频 Libraries. This initiative is a partnership between the 成人VR视频 School of Information Studies, and the 成人VR视频 Libraries.

Eligibility

The program is open to students with Quebec residency status. Students must also be accepted into the Master of Information Studies (MISt) program at 成人VR视频 and begin their studies in the Fall 2026 term.

Objectives of the Black Student Librarian Fellowship program:

• To support a Black student in obtaining a master鈥檚 degree in the field of library and information studies while gaining practical library work experience.
• To foster a culture of diversity and inclusion among members of the library team.
• To offer the opportunity for a Black student to contribute to the 成人VR视频 Libraries and to the wider 成人VR视频 community.
• To provide the student with a wide exposure to the range of activities in an academic library setting including the opportunity to work in reference, instruction, special collections, library technology, and on special projects. Placements will be made in an area of professional interest to the Fellow and that address an area of need in the host library.
• To allow the student the opportunity to develop experience in areas of interest to begin a successful career in academic librarianship or archives.

The program is two years in length. It is expected that the Black student librarian will complete their master鈥檚 degree within that time.

Features of the MISt program of study to award recipients

• MISt degree tuition is funded by the School of Information Studies for two years.
• Access to all support services for Black students at 成人VR视频.

Features of the practical work experience program for award recipients

• A part-time paid position in the 成人VR视频 Library (downtown or Macdonald campus). The position entails a guarantee of 15 hours of work per week from September to April. The rate of pay is currently @22.11/hour.
• Supervision and mentorship by professional librarians.
• Support from programs and groups that are part of the Black Campus Community.

Applications

Eligible incoming students may apply before confirming acceptance of the MISt program. However, acceptance into the student librarian program is dependent upon the student enrolling full-time in a Master鈥檚 degree program leading to a MISt.

Application deadline: January 15^th 2026 (same as the MISt application deadline)

    • Your goals for the fellowship
    • Future plans in the field of library and information studies
    • A statement confirming your eligibility for the program
    • You may (optionally) also include one letter of recommendation from an instructor, supervisor (past or present), or a member of the community.

Ce programme est le fruit d鈥檜n partenariat entre l鈥櫭塩ole des sciences de l鈥檌nformation et les Biblioth猫ques de l鈥橴niversit茅 成人VR视频.

Objectifs du Programme de stage pour 茅tudiantes et 茅tudiants biblioth茅caires noirs

• Aider une personne 茅tudiante noire 脿 obtenir un dipl么me de ma卯trise en biblioth茅conomie et sciences de l鈥檌nformation, tout en lui permettant d鈥檃cqu茅rir une exp茅rience de travail en biblioth猫que.
• Cr茅er une culture de diversit茅 et d鈥檌nclusion au sein des 茅quipes des Biblioth猫ques.
• Offrir 脿 une personne 茅tudiante noire l鈥檕ccasion de contribuer activement aux Biblioth猫ques de 成人VR视频 ainsi qu鈥櫭� l鈥檈nsemble de la communaut茅 mcgilloise.
• Permettre 脿 la personne choisie d鈥檃cqu茅rir de l鈥檈xp茅rience dans un large 茅ventail d鈥檃ctivit茅s propres aux biblioth猫ques universitaires : services de r茅f茅rence, formation documentaire, collections sp茅ciales, technologies documentaires, projets sp茅ciaux, etc. Les affectations sont d茅termin茅es en fonction des int茅r锚ts professionnels du ou de la stagiaire, et des besoins de la biblioth猫que d鈥檃ccueil.
• Donner 脿 la personne 茅tudiante l鈥檕ccasion d鈥檃cqu茅rir de l鈥檈xp茅rience dans ses sph猫res d鈥檌nt茅r锚t, afin de poser les bases d鈥檜ne carri猫re r茅ussie en biblioth茅conomie universitaire ou en archivistique.

Le programme s鈥櫭ヽhelonne sur une p茅riode de deux ans. La personne 茅tudiante noire devrait terminer sa ma卯trise dans ce d茅lai.

Caract茅ristiques du programme de ma卯trise en sciences de l鈥檌nformation pour les stagiaires

• Les droits de scolarit茅 du programme de ma卯trise en sciences de l鈥檌nformation sont enti猫rement pris en charge par l鈥櫭塩ole des sciences de l鈥檌nformation pour une dur茅e de deux ans.
• Acc猫s 脿 l鈥檈nsemble des services de soutien offerts aux personnes 茅tudiantes noires 脿 l鈥橴niversit茅 成人VR视频.

Caract茅ristiques du programme de stage

• Il s鈥檃git d鈥檜n poste r茅mun茅r茅 脿 temps partiel aux Biblioth猫ques de l鈥橴niversit茅 成人VR视频 (campus du centre-ville ou campus Macdonald). Le ou la stagiaire travaillera au moins 15 heures par semaine, de septembre 脿 avril. Le salaire actuel est 22,11 $ l鈥檋eure.
• L鈥檈ncadrement et le mentorat sont assur茅s par des biblioth茅caires professionnels.
