Use this strategy before or at the beginning of your workshop to help you answer questions like 鈥渨hat do the participants already know about the topic of this workshop?鈥� and 鈥渨hat are their interests, needs, and expectations?鈥� Gathering this type of information conveys the message that you care, and may help you to adjust the depth and pace of your workshop to fit a particular group.
There are many ways to conduct a Background Knowledge Probe.
Before the Workshop:
- Send an email beforehand with short-answer questions for participants. This can be included in registration.
- Create an online poll to use during the workshop with key questions. Find instructions on how to create a poll here.
During the Workshop:
- Pose a small number of questions at the beginning of the workshop and have participants raise their hands in response.
- For an in-person workshop: have participants raise their hands in response.
- For a virtual workshop: have participants type answers in the chat, anticipate delay between question asked and time it takes participants to think and type answer in chat
