About the Partnership Grant

In the summer of 2018, Project Director Dr. Laurie Gottlieb was awarded a Partnership Grant for a ground-breaking research project entitled Transforming Nurses’ Work Environments Through a Strengths-Based Leadership and Management Training Program.

The five-year project includes co-investigators, collaborators, and institutional partners from academic, not-for-profit, and hospital backgrounds in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. The grant is jointly funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

The main objective of this project is to refine, deliver, and evaluate a Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership Program (SBNH-L Program). The leadership program will empower nurse managers to lead via a Strengths-Based approach, enabling them to access the full scope of their competencies, create healthier work environments for interdisciplinary teams, and to ultimately provide the best care possible.

Our innovative and unique leadership program contains three components:

  1. Story-Sharing Materials
    The creation of innovative, multi-media teaching materials for story-sharing and sharing circles to be used in each of the 12 modules (#2);
  2. 12-Module Course
    The refinement of a 12-module course that integrates the best practice of healthcare with a Strengths-Based approach, paying attention to sex and gender issues in the workplace;
  3. ²Ñ±ð²Ô³Ù´Ç°ù²õ³ó¾±±èÌý
    The development of a mentorship program with situated coaching over the course of the leadership program to ensure implementation and sustainability. Mentees will have an opportunity to consolidate their learnings and to deepen their understanding of how challenges can be guided by a Strengths-Based approach.

The training program will be delivered to nurse managers at the project's five clinical partner institutions beginning in the fall of 2020.
