This seminar surveys recent theory and research on the interaction of culture and听psychiatric disorders. Topics to be covered include: history of cultural psychiatry; crossnational听epidemiological and ethnographic research on major and minor psychiatric听disorders; culture-bound syndromes and idioms of distress; culture, emotion and social听interaction; ritual and symbolic healing; mental health of indigenous peoples; mental听health of immigrants and refugees; psychiatric theory and practice as cultural听constructions; methods of cross-cultural research; globalization and the future of听cultural psychiatry.
