Medical Equipment

Students are responsible for the purchase of their own medical equipment for first year:

  • stethoscope
  • pen light
  • BP cuff
  • reflex hammer
  • ophthalmoscope/otoscope (recommended)
  • tuning forks (128Hz)
  • laboratory supplies required: a white long lab coat, anatomy dissecting kit/2 persons (not biology kit), one box of gloves, and one pair of safety glasses/person
  • ocular protection - personal goggles permitted if they meet published Health Canada Standards (or CSA-Z94.3)

Medical devices (i.e. medical equipment) used by students in the MDCM Program for diagnosis must meet the following criteria:

  1. Licensed for use for diagnostic purposes in Canada, or exempt from licensure as per Health Canada regulations
  2. Efficacious, at a level similar to recommended products
  3. Able to be cleaned in accordance with standard infection prevention and control measures, in a manner similar to recommended products

Students are encouraged to purchase recommended medical devices. If a student wishes to use a non-standard product:

1. The student is responsible to provide evidence that the device meets the above-mentioned criteria

2. The student accepts that s/he is held to the same standard of performance as students using recommended products (i.e. using a non-standard or unusual product is not an excuse for underperformance)

3. The student understands that the MDCM Program will require a student to cease the use of a non-standard product, and will require the use of a recommended product if, at any time, use of a non-standard product may pose a risk to patient care or patient safety.

Students are also responsible for purchasing one white lab coat with their name embroidered for the first year via the 成人VR视频 Bookstore. Information about this will be communicated during orientation and at the beginning of the first year. The white coat will also be needed for the White Coat Ceremony which is held in September or October of the second year.

It is also recommended that students purchase a pager or cell phone for TCP (Transition to Clinical Practice) and Clerkship, please note that a cell phone is the preferred communication tool option.
