General Information about the Smoking Cessation Program

Introduction to the former Smoking Cessation Program:

Nothing is more important for the prevention of several cancers and over 50 other diseases than eliminating the use of tobacco products. The Smoking Cessation Program had provided knowledge and support for smokers who want to quit. It consisted of a series of 8 group sessions and monthly follow-up support sessions was offered at the Cancer Prevention Centre (CPC) at the Jewish General Hospital. The sessions were free and available to the general public and were given in French and English.

Objective:

The main objective of the Cancer Prevention Centre鈥檚 Smoking Cessation Program was to help individuals quit smoking. The program also strived to achieve the following specific goals:

  • Reduce the level of smoking in Quebec.
  • Target high-risk populations, which are groups that exhibit higher rates of smoking, because these populations require greater effort on our part in terms of helping to reduce the disparities in the rates of smoking between different populations in Quebec.
  • Be more proactive in the serious matter of preventing the younger generation from starting smoking at a young age.
  • Participate in activism by contributing to inaugurating government policies that will increase the smoking cessation rate in Quebec.
  • To reach out to other parts of the world and help establish smoking cessation programs and policies in other countries.
