PROJECT TITLE

Improvement of internships in the health sector in order to meet the needs of English-speaking populations in the Western part of Laval.

CLIENTELE

The CSSS de Laval’s project is intended for university-level students who are able to meet the needs of the English-speaking population and who are studying occupational therapy, social work, nutrition and nursing.


DESCRIPTION

With this project, CSSS de Laval aims to: (1) create internships within the teams of the new Centre intégré de services de première ligne de l’ouest de l’Île (CISPLOI) and the CLSC Ruisseau-Papineau in order to improve access to services for the English-speaking populations; (2) establish policies for welcoming and supporting interns; (3) promote the hiring of interns who are able to serve the Laval client population in both official languages. This will help improve access to health care and social services in English for English-speaking and Allophone clienteles, more specifically in the Western part of the island. To meet these objectives:

By the end of 2011-2012, the institution will translate documents for future interns, recruit internship supervisors, and purchase equipment to set up computer stations and desks for interns. Two internships have been planned for the Winter 2012 semester: oneÌýin nutrition and oneÌýin nursing. For 2012-2013, the CSSS de Laval has planned twoÌýinternships in occupational therapy for the summer semester, oneÌýin nursing for the fall semester and twoÌýin social services. A portion of the budget will be allocated to services provided by an administrative technician who will be in charge of budget and program administration follow-up as well as coordinating, welcoming and supporting students and supervisors. Interns will also receive help in drafting documents in French, if needed.

As part of the Un pont vers l’embauche program, the CSSS de Laval welcomed two nutrition interns, one nursing intern and one occupational therapy intern, for a total of 98 internship days in 2012.As a result of the efforts made, three other internships, one in recreation (7-day), one in occupational therapy (35-day) and one in social service (45-day), were implemented in winter 2012 and spring 2013.All of these internships were geared towards university students (five from ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ, one from the University of Ottawa), except for the seven-day recreation internship, which was for a college student. In its commitment to support interns and supervisors in fulfilling their tasks, the CSSS acquired two laptop computers and made them available to nutrition and occupational therapy supervisors. These are important tools for internships that require travelling between various work environments. The CSSS also acquired a desk to create a workspace for occupational therapy interns. In addition, supervisors received a partial release of three hours/week, a measure that was appreciated by supervisor/intern pairs. A nutrition supervisor and a nursing supervisor also participated in internship supervision training. To encourage employment at the end of the internship, a new form was developed so that intern candidates can be referred directly to human resources. Conferences specifically geared toward interns were also organized by the human resources department, followed by meetings with the staffing team. This measure allowed the CSSS to collect forty resumes from all internship fields. Several other conferences are planned. Finally, to ensure that interns adapt better to their environment, meetings were held with community partners.

DESCRIPTION

As part of the Training and Retention of Health Professionals Project's Retention Program, the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital intends to recruit interns who are able to communicate in English and encourage their hiring once they have completed their studies. The ultimate goal of the program is to improve access to rehabilitation services by the English-speaking residents of Laval. To meet these objectives:

By March 31, 2012, the institution plans, for the first year of the program, to accept interns from ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ, raising the number of internships in occupational therapy from threeÌýto six, and in physiotherapy, from fiveÌýto six. The internships will last seven weeks. Interns will work five days per week, for a total of 245 hours per internship. Depending on whether they take on oneÌýor twoÌýstudents simultaneously, the supervisors will receive support from a professional sponsor and the clinical teaching coordinator. For 2012-2013, the institution is considering increasing the number of internships in both disciplines, offering up to sixteenÌýinternships in physiotherapy (nine with 245 hours and seven with 280 hours) and up to 20 internships in occupational therapy (14 with 245 hours and six with 280 hours).

ACTIVITIES COMPLETED

During winter 2012, the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital welcomed four occupational therapy interns and four physiotherapy interns. All internships lasted 35 days and all of the students were from ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ. The eight supervisors assigned to these internships were supported by the supervising professional and the teaching coordinator. In March, the institution participated in the ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ Career Fair (occupational therapy and physiotherapy).With the union’s approval, the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital created, in winter 2012, a permanent speech therapy position to meet the needs of children whose mother tongue is English. In 2012-2013, despite major shuffles of its entire personnel structure, the institution was still able to welcome interns, thanks to the Un pont vers l'embauche program. In total, 1,155 internship days were completed, almost evenly distributed between physiotherapy and occupational therapy. All 29 interns were enrolled at ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ. Four occupational therapy interns and one physiotherapy intern were hired at the end of their internship. One occupational therapy student was also hired for the summer. In addition, the institution implemented a program to welcome students as part of their Masters project. Of the thirty-two students who were welcomed, one was subsequently hired. Supervisor support measures were maintained during the second stage of the project and managers are now asked to participate in welcoming interns. A two intern-clinical teaching was experimented and 14 supervisors participated in the coaching session offered by ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ’s School of Physical and Occupational Therapy. An intern welcome document was also produced.

Le CRDI has also approached educational institutions such as ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ, the Université de ²Ñ´Ç²Ô³Ù°ùé²¹±ô and Vanier College.


CLIENTELE

The project from the CRDI Normand-Laramée is intended for students who are able to meet the needs of an English-speaking population.


DESCRIPTION

Currently, the CRDI Normand-Laramée accepts an average of one intern per year. As part of the Training and Retention of Health Professionals Project's Retention Program, this institution aims to implement an organizational framework which encourages increasing the contribution of interns who are able to meet the needs of an English-speaking population within the organization and reinforce the material and personnel structures needed to recruit, welcome, integrate, support and train interns. To meet this objective:

Starting in January 2012, one resource will be assigned to manage internships. This person will be responsible for reaching agreements with educational institutions for creating four or five internships for the Fall 2012 semester. This resource will also set up a computer and telephone station for the interns and will develop support tools that the CRDI staff will be able to use to support interns. A part of the budget will be allocated to internship supervision. The internships will start in September 2012, and a satisfaction survey will be completed by interns and internship supervisors.

ACTIVITIES COMPLETED

The CRDI Normand-Laramée took advantage of the first stage of its project to implement its intern welcoming and coordination structure, identifying the internship coordinator, purchasing computers, and drafting and printing promotional leaflets. During fall 2012, the institution welcomed four special education interns capable of meeting the needs of an English-speaking clientele. Three of them came from Lasalle College and completed a fifteen-day internship (one day per week).The fourth intern, enrolled at Vanier College, completed a thirty-day internship, i.e. two days per week throughout the fall. As part of this project, the CRDI created several tools to supervise and support the internship supervisors’ work. In this respect, the institution reviewed its internship policy and created an intern welcoming procedure and a monitoring procedure in case any problems arose during the internship (supervisor support by the manager and the internship coordinator).The institution also produced a pamphlet for recruiting supervisors and a guide for interns, and a guide for psychoeducation, special education and nursing internship supervisors is in production. A satisfaction survey for interns was also produced as well as communications materials for the welcome day. All of these documents are currently being completed.
