OBJECTIVES
The Nunavik region is populated by Inuits whose mother tongue is Inuktitut and who are very interested in keeping it as their first language. Physicians, nursing staff and other healthcare professionals who work in the region, whether English-speaking or French-speaking, offer services in English most of the time because English is the second language most spoken among Quebec Inuits.Ìý The use and support of healthcare services in Inuktitut have been identified as regional priorities that include the need to develop a quality interpretation service.
Project 1: Medical interpreter training will allow them to learn how to interpret patient/physician consultations, information about the body’s three systems, diabetes and infectious diseases. It will also allow Inuits to be self-sufficient with regard to medical interpreter training. Ìý In addition, healthcare professionals in the region will receive information on how to work with an Inuit interpreter. Ìý
Project 2: The English training project aims to develop the communications officer’s communication skills in both spoken and written English.
NEEDS AND PRIORITIES
Project 1: Provide quality medical interpretation services to users whose maternal language is Inuktitut.
Project 2: Ensure that the communications officer can communicate effectively with the Nunavik population.

Interpreters Regional Training Project
ÌýOBJECTIVE
Better equip the health and social services network to provide translation (interpretation) services that meet the needs of the Inuit population of Nunavik and of medical staff that interact with them.

ÌýDESCRIPTION OF PLANNED ACTIVITIES
Training consists of face-to-face classroom training. There will be 3 groups of five training days each (two on the Hudson coast and one on the Ungava coast.) given to interpreters to increase their skills translating from Inuktitut to English (or French) and from English (or French) to Inuktitut using appropriate medical terminology. For participants unable to reach one of these groups, the trainer will give them the training by videoconferencing from one or other health center.Ìý
PARTICIPATION INCENTIVES
Courses will be given during working hours without staff replacement. Participants’ expenses (travel, meals and lodging) will be paid.Ìý
TRAINING ORGANIZATION
Training will be given by an experienced independent contractor, Jacques Raymond, and by a local interpreter, Annie Weetaluktuk.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANNED ACTIVITIES
Project 1: Ten-day face-to-face training in two groups using Entry Level Translator Course: Inuktitut to English/French
Project 2: 100-hour immersion course over four weeks in Halifax.
PARTICIPATION INCENTIVES
Project 1: The course will be offered during working hours and participants will be reimbursed according to their hourly rate.
Project 2: The participant will be reimbursed for his time and expenses.
